Town halls scheduled this week to address immigration reform and AgJOBS
Thousands of farm workers send strong message
about the need for immigration reform
In response to the current debate in the U.S. Senate around Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007, farm workers and supporters are organizing town halls at a time when lawmakers are back in their districts on recess and away from Washington, D.C. politics. Thousands of farm workers throughout California and Texas will send a powerful message that a comprehensive solution to our broken immigration system is needed, and that reform must include AgJOBS.
AgJOBS is the landmark legislation which will allow immigrant farm workers the opportunity to earn the legal right to permanently stay in this country by continuing to work in agriculture. Negotiated over the last nine years by the UFW and the agricultural industry, AgJobs is supported by over 800 organizations.
In response to the town halls scheduled for this week, United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez said, “Farm workers across the United States have been engaged from the beginning in this historic debate around immigration reform. Our town halls are just one of many actions they have taken over the last several months to urge Congress to enact immigration reform this year.”
