Thousands walk to honor Cesar Chavez
Thousands of people from across Southern California will join together on Saturday, March 27 at historic Olvera Street to celebrate the 6th Annual Cesar E. Chavez Walk. The walk’s goal is spreading awareness among young people about Chavez’s messages on social justice and non-violence.
Among walkers who will assemble are UFW President Arturo Rodriguez, Chavez’s widow, Helen, Chavez family members, Edward James Olmos (“American Family”), Mike Farrell (“MASH”, “Providence”), Ed Begley Jr (“Kingdom Hospital”), Rick Salinas (“Culture Clash”), Mike Gomez (“General Hospital” and “Hunter”), Luis Avalos (“Paquitos Christmas” and “Resurrection Blvd”) and Gregory Nava (Executive Producer and Director, “American Family”), City Coucilmember Antonio Villaraigosa and other elected officials.
“By demonstrating their commitment to continue his legacy, thousands of young people who walk will also pay tribute to Cesar Chavez," says the UFW’s Rodriguez.
The walk occurs the weekend before California observes the March 31 Cesar Chavez Day and students throughout the state will learn about this American hero and participate in related community service projects.
Additionally, as part of walk related activities, a speaker’s bureau made up of Chavez family members, local elected officials and other figures will attend school assemblies and to speak about the legacy of the legendary farm worker and civil rights leader, throughout the months of March and April.
