"National Day of Action" in Kern County
BAKERSFIELD – Thousands of Kern workers and their supporters were absent from work Monday to support the “National Day of Action.” In addition, many people are refraining from spending money to show the economic impact of the immigrant community.
Organizers say the national movement is designed to show Americans how much immigrants are needed in our country.
Meanwhile, some local businesses have closed their doors in observance of a “Day without an Immigrant.” Bakersfield’s Ranch Market and Vallarta Supermarket are just two businesses that planned to be closed Monday.
Schools also have been affected by the boycott including Bakersfield City School District that reports 4,000 students missing today, which is 14% of the total enrollment.
And, at Beach Park in central Bakersfield, thousands of people are gathering to show their support for the “National Day of Action.”
The Highway Patrol has closed the Rosedale Highway off-ramp from Northbound Highway 99.
The Bakersfield Police have also closed Oak Street between 24th Street and Truxtun Avenue, and 21st Street near Beach Park because of the large crowd.
Meanwhile, officials are warning folks who aren’t part of the protest to stay away.
