Hundreds of Farm Workers to Attend UFW Foundation Meetings Held in Tulare and Kern Counties on Citrus Freeze
Farm workers to Reveal How Disaster Has Frozen Their Everyday Lives
What: Working to inform key officials nationwide of the needs of farm workers after last month’s citrus freeze, the UFW Foundation is holding meetings in Tulare and Kern counties to provide workers and their families with an opportunity to voice their concerns and need for assistance. Topics for discussion include obtaining unemployment benefits, rent/mortgage and utilities assistance as well as simply putting food on the table.
Earlier this morning, the U.S. Department of Agriculture declared 18 California counties disaster areas, including Tulare and Kern. Causing more than $800 million in damage to citrus crops, the freezing temperatures of last month will also leave approximately 28,000 farm workers jobless in the San Joaquin Valley.
