Fair Harvest Meals The United Farm Workers is planning “Fair Harvest Meals” on college campuses throughout California. The sharing of food transcends all differences between people. • College students will host the meals. • Farm workers will bring the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor. • The UFW will bring a 50-year history of struggle and success. • The media will bring our message to voters. • The students will connect us to millions. The UFW is organizing students to use their social networking skills to share their stories of sharing a Fair Harvest Meal. We believe that after sharing a meal with farm workers, college students will get active in the 2010 election. Forgotten by Foodies “Locally grown” “Grass fed” “Organic” “Natural” — We intend to make the principles of a Fair Harvest as relevant and ubiquitous as “Fair Trade.” Farm workers are not mentioned in any discussion young people have about food. Eating healthy isn’t correlated to those who are exploited. The Fair Harvest Meal Project begins that. Farm Workers and Farm Animals
Fair Harvest Meals will expose college students to the fact that California has stronger laws protecting farm animals than farm workers. Our Program The Fair Harvest Meal Project will kick-off in Fresno, California, where on Sept. 30, 1962,the first convention of the National Farm Workers Association (now known as the UFW) convened with hundreds of delegates assembled in an abandoned movie theater. The group’s distinctive flag, a black eagle symbol on a white circle in a red field, is unveiled. At the Fresno Fair Harvest Meal, we will unveil a Fair Harvest website for college students to get informed, have a voice in the 2010 election and become activisits in the farm worker movement. Our goal is to have Fair Harvest Meal student participants share their experiences to 25,000 people through social media networks (facebook,myspace,twitter). Cesar Chavez called on Americans to “Boycott Grapes” in the 1960s and won the first union contract protections for farm workers in America’s history. Read more here. |
