Afternoon of union wine tasting, Latino rock, Chavez photo exhibit premiere highlight annual event at National Chavez Center
Looking for an enjoyable and interesting way to spend a Saturday afternoon? The historic National Chavez Center is hosting the tasting of fine unionized wines from the Napa and Sonoma valleys, good food, Latino rock and premiere of a new photo exhibition on Cesar Chavez. This annual event takes place at the visitors’ center and memorial garden built around Chavez’s gravesite at La Paz, the Farm Worker Movement headquarters in the Tehachapi Mountains at Keene. Events, underway from 1 to 6 p.m., include:
• Wine tasting featuring wineries affiliated with Gallo family vineyards, including those in the Sonoma Valley, as well as St. Supery winery in the Napa Valley. Both companies, which employ workers protected by United Farm Workers contracts, have donated cases of wine for Saturday’s event.
• Musical entertainment featuring Marcos Reyes with Abel Sanchez and Jorge Santana, “The Voices of Latin Rock.”
• Opening of the “Portraits of Cesar Chavez,” a photo exhibition with heroic images of the farm labor and civil rights leader taken by Los Angeles photographer Victor Aleman during the 10 years he worked with Chavez and the UFW. Aleman is working on a photographic book about Chavez to be published this year. The exhibit runs through Sept. 31.
