We're excited. After months of intense negotiations between the UFW and major grower associations, Democrats and Republicans introduced the Farm Workforce Modernization Act . This farm worker immigration reform bill just passed by the House of Representatives with a strong bipartisan vote. Farm workers are feeling empowered. Our members traveled to Washington DC to walk the halls of Congress to personally share their stories with their representatives. Children should never again have to worry whether their moms and dads are coming home from work. This milestone bill creates a way for qualified undocumented farm workers to gain temporary legal status and have an opportunity to eventually earn citizenship. UFW President Teresa Romero joined our members in travelling to Washington DC as they shared their stories with their representatives and watched the vote. We feel confident as the measure moves to the Senate.
In recent contract news, we are succeeding in a new collaborative approach that benefits both the vegetable workers at D'Arrigo Brothers and the company through a breakthrough contract. Gallo of Sonoma workers won a dramatic wage increase that established $16.50 as the minimum wage for 2020. Over 650 tomato workers at Gargiulo renegotiated their contract and established tomato industry leading piece rates and an improved pension.
A union contract makes such a difference to the farm workers we serve. Leobardo Padilla has worked his whole life in the fields. “So much has changed. I was one of the lucky workers that met Cesar Chavez, and learned firsthand what it means to stand up and fight for our rights. At Montpelier we enjoy a union contact with a bonus, a paid medical plan and a pension for our retirement. But the fight isn't over. In my 37+ years of working the fields I have seen many other people struggling because as farm workers we are the most underappreciated workers. I am proud to have my union contract.”
Thank you for being there and helping farm workers. With the help of good supporters like yourself we have accomplished so much - even with the current environment. In this season of giving we ask you to again help farm workers. There is still so much more to be done. Your gift of any amount will make a difference.
