| Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in honor of the 83rd anniversary of Cesar Chavez’s birthday on March 31st: "Every year, on his birthday, we renew our commitment to the fight for justice, equality, and opportunity that defined Cesar Chavez’s life. "Cesar Chavez devoted his life to improving the working and living conditions of America’s farm workers – and indeed, the lives of all Americans. He knew that the values of the Hispanic community are the values of all Americans. His efforts for fair wages, pension benefits, and medical coverage have improved the lives of countless. "This year, we celebrate the successful passage of health insurance reform that will extend health care to 32 million Americans. This accomplishment is consistent with Cesar Chavez’s message when he said, ‘We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community… Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.’ "On the occasion of what would have been Cesar Chavez’s 83rd birthday, we pause to thank him for the gifts he gave to America’s workers, to rededicate ourselves to the causes he championed, and to recommit our nation to renewing the American dream for all."
