U.S. Senate vote, urge Action around Final Passage
In response to the important vote taken today to revive the debate around the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 which includes AgJOBS, the UFW will hold a press event to inform the public about the shift in the immigration reform debate. The pending legislation represents the only hope farm workers and other immigrants have to transition out of the shadows and into society… this year.
AgJOBS, the landmark legislation which was included in the bill will allow immigrant farm workers the opportunity to earn the legal right to permanently stay in this country by continuing to work in agriculture. Negotiated over the last seven years by the UFW and the agricultural industry, AgJOBS has the strong support of over 800 organizations.
In response to the cloture vote that passed today, United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez said, “Today’s vote demonstrates the commitment the U.S. Senate has to fixing a system that is clearly broken. Last week, I was honored to be with farm worker leadership from across the country to share our concerns about the stalled bill. Today, we remain committed to ensuring that the rights of farm workers are protected throughout the process.”
