UFW & UFW Foundation on first round of Senate Parliamentarian rulings on legalization: ‘We are serious about not going home empty-handed this year’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In round one of what is expected to be a process with multiple rounds, the Senate Parliamentarian’s ruling today rejected the first attempt for legalization of farm workers, Dreamers, TPS recipients and other essential workers in the budget reconciliation. United Farm Workers President Teresa Romero and UFW Foundation Executive Director Diana Tellefson Torres issued the following statements in response.

United Farm Workers President Teresa Romero, said:

“Our movement has not wavered. Like the essential farm workers who have kept going during the pandemic, we will keep fighting. Senate Democrats have committed to come up with a new construction for the parliamentarian and our expectation is that Congress pass legalization this year.”

UFW Foundation Executive Director Diana Tellefson Torres, said:

“We are serious about not going home empty-handed this year. Senate leadership has committed to pass legalization and they’ve assured us they will go back to the parliamentarian and approach with different options. The bottom line is this: we expect legalization for farm workers, Dreamers, TPS recipients and other essential workers to be passed this year.”
