The Delano Police Department provided the Kern County District Attorney’s office evidence that two ICE deportation agents gave false information to the police about their pursuit of Santos Hilario Garcia and Marcelina Garcia Profecto on March 13. The couple died in a car crash fleeing ICE agents. The District Attorney’s office declined to file charges against the agents.
Santos Hilario and Marcelina did not get justice from the Kern County district attorney, and they deserve it.
They were not criminals. They were farm workers whose only sin was working hard to provide for their family. They and their six orphaned children are just the latest casualties of the federal government’s recent targeting of hardworking immigrant farm workers who toil and sacrifice to feed all of us.
