More than 100 to create “human billboard” to turn out Los Angeles’ Latino voters
On the day before election day–where voters choose between Antonio Villaraigosa and James Hahn for mayor of Los Angeles—more than 100 members of heavily Latino unions and community organizations as well as Hollywood celebrities, politicians and students will create a “human billboard” at a busy intersection in East Los Angeles urging residents to go to the polls on Tuesday.
They will hold signs—both in English and Spanish—sporting the slogans: “Vote for better education,” “Vote for your children’s future,” “Vote for a better life,” “Vote for health,” “Vote for respect” and will be waving the UFW’s distinctive black eagle flag.
This “human billboard” comes in the midst of intensive” Get-Out-The-Vote” activities targeting Latinos throughout Los Angeles, including door-to-door appeals sponsored by community groups and the Organization of Los Angeles Workers (OLAW), a coalition of L.A.-area unions that consists of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees, the Service Employees International Union–which sponsors the Justice for Janitors campaign—and the Cesar Chavez-founded United Farm Workers. On Election day, more than 1,000 Latinos are expected to participate in this effort by walking door to door in the precincts they live in.
