UFW Plans Lobby Day to Ask Governor:
Remember Farm Workers, SIGN SB 180
What: For more than five months, the UFW has worked to move SB 180 – “The Fair Treatment for Farm Worker’s Act” forward. This Wednesday, hundreds of UFW farm workers from across the state are holding a lobby day to ask Governor Schwarzenegger to sign the bill.
Over the summer, the UFW has proven the majority of laws designed to protect farm workers are not being enforced in the fields. For example, with very limited resources, the UFW has recently documented hundreds of violations at dozens of farms statewide that employ more than 45,000 farm workers. Violations revealed that daily, thousands of workers are suffering daily and being denied the basics, such as shade, clean water and rest breaks.
SB 180 would make it easier for farm workers to organize without the fear of being fired.

Visuals: Hundreds of farm workers on Capitol steps lobbying the Governor to pass SB 180. UFW will also be handing out small umbrellas to all representatives of the legislature to show them what too many farm-labor contractors consider “adequate” shade for farm workers. Outside, on the Capitol lawn, the UFW will have examples of what real shade protection looks like and for anyone thirsty, farm workers will be providing cool, drinking water.
