Dreamers focus on passing Dream Act this year

Members of the United Farm Workers Foundation will join Dreamers, other immigrants and parishioners in a procession and mass this evening in Delano celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Marked this month in Catholic dioceses across the nation, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe was declared as time of unity with Dreamers by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Today’s procession beginning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and ending with a mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, both in Delano, will honor the accomplishments, hopes, fears and needs of all families that have come to the U.S. seeking a better life.

The mass will be dedicated to Dreamers who are calling on the Republican-controlled Congress to honor commitments to enact a clean Dream Act by the end of the year after Donald Trump ended the Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals in September and turned over resolution of the issue to lawmakers.

The repeal of DACA is creating an urgent crisis. With each passing day that Congress fails to act, 122 DACA recipients lose their protections from deportation. Underscoring the urgency of passing the Dream Act, the UFW Foundation will hand out 122 red roses to community members, each representing the plight of an unprotected young person who is losing his or her legal protection every day.
